Pan de Vida (“Bread of Life”)
Pan de Vida Ministries was founded in the fall of 1990 by Paul and Ona Seaton. It was created with the purpose of helping abused and abandoned children. In February of 1994 the institution was handed over to María Elena and Darrel Hilbrands. Pan de Vida had 12 children at the time.
By 1996, the number of children had increased to 40, requiring more and better facilities to be able to manage more children.
Pan de Vida obtained a 3 hectares (7.5 acres) of property in 1999 through donations. Construction began in 2001 on the boy’s dormitory. Over a period of seven years dormitories, a dining hall, a school, workshops, and storage areas were built with the help of volunteers, businesses, foundations and the state and federal government of Mexico. In January 2014 a new boys’ dorm was completed with the help of Sika Mexicana and Banamex. The old boys’ dorm has been transformed into a kindergarten, storage area, and housing for volunteers.
A bachelor’s degree in Pedagogy was started in 2005 with the purpose of better preparing our teachers for the challenges of Christian teaching.
At this point we have graduated over 150 students from elementary school, 50 from junior high school and 40 from high school. There are 15 full-time volunteers and 20 other part-time volunteers to help care for around 80 children
Pan de Vida offers abused and abandoned child the possibility to be in a place that they can call home.
